THE OLD FOLKS WILL TRY THEIR HAND

Mansfield, Ohio, April 19, 1875

Jerome Lee, Esq.:  It has been suggested that a Spelling School which will take in especially middle aged and older persons, might be raised for next week -- say for Presbyterian Church.  I think Captain Douglass, Colonel Dickey, M.E. Douglass and others would take part, and in that case count me in.  See what you can do.  -- Henry C. Hedges.

We're In:

J.W. Myers P. Bigelow Thomas McBride Jerome Lee
B. Burns George W. Geddes L.B. Matson S.E. Fink
H.P. Davis John W. Jenner Stephen Priest S.L. Geddes
R. Brinkerhoff J.H. Cook O.H. Booth M. McDermott
Wm. A. Farber M.D. Ward J. Purdy Isaac Gass
J.J. King W.S. Bradford M.E. Douglass A.M. Burns
Geo. Clugston J.Y. Glessner - -

The above communication having been presented to the ladies of the Presbyterian Church, they have taken the matter in charge, and will give those gentlemen an opportunity of attending an old-fashioned spelling "Bee" in Smith's Opera-house Tuesday evening, April 27.  Admission 10 cents.

The suggestion of "middle-aged" being rather indefinite, may trouble some to know whether they are included in the list of spellers invited, and to settle that question it has been suggested that all children under thirty should be accompanied by their parents.  All are invited to attend this "Old Folk's" Spelling School, and see how it was done in days of yore.  Webster's Spelling Book will be used a part of the time if one can be found in town.

Col. Dickey assisted by M. McDermott, has kindly consented to pronounce the words.  Revs. Bronson and Miller will act as umpires;  and Hon. B. Burns and H.C. Hedges, Esqs. as captains.  Refreshments will be served on the stage during the intermission and after the spelling is over.  Admission to hall ten cents.
